Intrathecal infusion medications are medications that are injected into the spinal canal (intrathecal space surrounding the spinal cord), as in a spinal anesthesia or used in applications for chronic pain management, chronic back pain, complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), chronic pain due to cancer, chronic pain due to neuropathy, as well as other forms of sever chronic pain. The same drug given orally must enter the blood stream and has a much harder time reaching the brain. By the time it does, most of the drug has been absorbed by the body's system and is excreted. Drugs given intrathecally often have to be made up specially by a pharmacist or technician because they cannot contain any preservative or other potentially harmful inactive ingredients that are sometimes found in standard injectable drug preparations.
This drug delivery method has been shown to increase pain relief and comfort for people with severe pain. It may also cause fewer side effects than oral medications. Studies have shown that for people who did not experience enough pain relief with high doses of oral medication, most achieved significant pain control with intrathecal drug delivery and were able to improve their activities of daily living.
We prepare these solutions in a specially designed, highly regulated, environmentally controlled area. These solutions are not patient specific written prescribed medications. These solutions are made in a number of different ingredients, in addition to being made in different dosage strengths of each ingredient made, they are preservative free, single ingredient, single use vial solutions. These solutions are used in hospitals, patient care facilities, physician’s offices, and other medical facilities.
